Investigate method to update lecturer benches

Project Description

The request was initiated by Chandré Botha

Lecturer benches are on subnets. It takes long to update / cast due to various reasons (accessing keys, scheduling, etc). Image of the pc’s are probably not all the same. To change the accessibility will take proper planning as there are numerous options and tasks. This is an important task to manage perceptions and improve our image.

Phase 1: Do a survey – room no and mac address, subnet address and configuration of pc. Who is needed to attend to this?? 15 July 2014: Boeta distributed the phase 1-list. Pieter to investigate the possibilities based on the list.

Project Discussion 14 Responses to Investigate method to update lecturer benches

  1. The request is put on hold as per Rika Nieuwoudt’s request: it is dependent on the
    1) redefinition of the request
    2) Strategy has to be discussed with Academic Support Services

In the interim Thys Snyman will still document all the relevant information.

  2. Points to consider after last meeting held.

Deploying images to the benches is not really a support win. (each pc still needs to be touched)
Deploying only becomes more efficient if a software change needs to be done to all pc’s in a short time
Quick win technology can still be investigated (AMT) but at this stage the technology is not widely distributed under the lecture benches on potch campus.
A Virtual environment would be a big change in how lecktors benches is supported but no solution is currently available and infrastructure upgrades will be necessary. buy in from third party’s will also be required.
In short there is no big win in doing a deployment or image cast solution at this stage.

Maybe we should investigate the following as well? If you have a spare machine and someone who can look into this, we can give this a go as well.

Intel AMT, BIOS level remote management utility.

  7. I was delegated by Pieter to represent Architecture at this project.

First of all, thank you for the report on the analysis that has been done. I see that Open Source was mentioned as one of three possible solutions to the problem. However, in the report nothing about Open Source is mentioned as part of the analysis done. There is free/open source product called Clonezilla, which has been used quite extensively by the Lecture Capture teams. It can create a thick image and can then again be used to cast down this image to every computer via ssh. Has anyone looked at this before?

I feel we will need to do a performance comparison between all the available software, before we jump on some bandwagon. In the end, this needs to save us a lot of time due to the repetitive nature, so whatever we choose needs to be scalable.
