Revisit student email strategy

Project Description

The request was initiated by Adelle Lotter (11 Oct 2016)

After almost 2 years of the  ‘bring your own email’ strategy for students, the Google as well as Microsoft domains exist. This gives more opportunities.  Also. some practical issues become apparent. A few of these:
  • Sudents do not specify their email addresses – we populate the email address with the NWU gmail address.  Students do not use this address and they do not receive accounts.
  • Turnitin use student email addresses as unique id’s. If students change their email after they have used Tii for the first time they are invalid students in Tii
  • The Phasing out of P:drives results in students using Google drives.
  • Integrations between Sakai and Google exist that opens up new T&L possibilities.
We would like to investigate the possibility of issuing students with a fixed email address (Google or Microsoft).

Project Discussion One Response to Revisit student email strategy

  1. 01 Nov 2016: Adelle will schedule a meeting with a bigger group of stakeholders. There are a number of issues that have to be addressed.
The decisions regarding eFundi will influence this request.
IF the strategy changes, we have to start with communication to students in March 2017
